Is it permissible to read salaah on a carpet that is used in the place where I work?

Question

Is it permissible to read salaah on a carpet that is used in the place where I work? Its a meeting room where we hold meetings with clients.

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

It is permissible for one to pray on the carpet at work as long as there are no impurities on it. However, it is advisable that one does not pray directly on the carpet, rather he places a cloth on the carpet even if it be a thin one. Nevertheless, if one is confident that the room is far from any places of impurities, from which any impurity could have come, and is clean, he may pray on it.

Could you please tell me about Tasbeeh of Taraweeh?

Question

Could you please tell me about Tasbeeh of Taraweeh?

Answer

Traditionally, in each tarwīhah, the mustahabb break between each set of four rak’ahs of the Tarāwīh prayer, the Muslims of different regions, especially in Makkah and Madīnah, observed different acts of worship.  The Muslims in Makkah used to make tawāf of the Ka’bah during each tarwīhah, whereas those in Madīnah, unable to make tawāf, would pray an additional four rak’ahs instead.

However, during the tarwīhah, a person may recite the Qur’ān, tasbīh (Subhān Allāh), tahmīd (Alhamdulillāh), tahlīl (Lā ilāha illallāh), pray nawāfil individually, send durūd (blessings) on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, or simply remain silent.  This is mentioned by the fuqahā’ and ‘ulamā’ in their books, including al-Mabsūt,[1] al-Muhīt al-Burhānī,[2] Badā’i’ al-Ṣanā’i’,[3] Mukhtārāt al-Nawāzil,[4] al-Fatāwā al-Tātārkhāniyyah,[5] Ghunyat al-Mutamallī,[6] Nihāyat al-Murād,[7] Fath Bāb al-‘Ināyah,[8] Majma’ al-Anhur,[9] Imdād al-Ahkām,[10] and Fatāwā Rahīmiyyah.[11]

Surprisingly, none of the abovementioned books mention any masnūn or mustahabb du‘ā’ for the tarwīhah, including the du‘ā’ commonly read by Muslims in several Masjids, many of which advertise thedu‘ā’ on large printed banners.  This du‘ā’, commonly known as the “Tarāwīh Du‘ā’,” is as follows:

Exalted is the Possessor of the hidden and the manifest dominion.  Exalted is the Possessor of Might, Greatness, Reverence, Power, Pride, and Majesty.  Exalted is the Master, the Living, the one who neither sleeps nor dies.  All-perfect, All-holy, Our Lord, and the Lord of the angels and the souls.  O Allāh, grant us refuge from the Hellfire.  O Granter of refuge, O Granter of refuge, O Granter of refuge.

Please explain to me Ayah 11 of Surah An Nisa (the right of daughter in father’s property)

Question

Please explain to me Ayah 11 of Surah An Nisa (the right of daughter in father’s property)

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

The verse mentioned in your query is as follows:

يُوصِيكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي أَوْلاَدِكُمْ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ الأُنثَيَيْنِ(النساء: 11)

Allah commands you in regards to your children’s (inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females…( Quran 4: 11)

In this verse Allah Ta’ala is making mention of how the inheritance must be distributed amongst the inheritors. You have asked specifically about the portion of the daughter in your query. In this ayah Allah Ta’ala is informing us that the portion of the son will be two times that of the daughter.

During the time of ignorance the people would only give from the inheritance to their sons and the daughters would be deprived of their portions completely. Therefore, after Islam came it removed this oppression and gave the daughters their right of inheritance. The son is given two times the amount of the daughter because he (son) is required to spend from his wealth to maintain the household and fulfill the needs of his wife and children. On the other hand the daughter is full owner of her portion of the inheritance and is not required to spend from her wealth in order to maintain the household. Thus, it will be completely just to give the son two times the amount of the daughter.

Can a women marry without her parents being present?

Question

Can a women marry without her parents being present?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

If a sane adult woman marries without her parents’ consent, then the marriage is valid, although it is not appropriate to do so.

However, if she marries on less than mahr mithl (average dowry of the women in her family) or if she marries someone who is not kufū’ (equivalent in lineage, wealth, religiosity, and occupation), then her parents/guardians have a right to object to the marriage.

When a couple gets married and is about to embark on a new lifelong journey, they should do so acquiring the du’ās and blessings of their family members, especially their parents.  If either of the two marry without their parents’ consent, then they might lose the barakah that comes through the sincere du’ās of one’s parents.

Who decides when Ramadan begins?

Question

Who decides when Ramadan begins?

Answer

Ramadān commences once the crescent of Ramadān is sighted or after completing 30 days of Sha’bān. It is not decided by any person/ committee. It depends whether the moon has been sighted or not.

The Holy Qurān

The Qurān was revealed during the month of Ramadān, hence, there is a special connection between Ramadān and the Holy Qurān. We should remove our Qurāns from the shelf and start reciting the Qurān. In this way, we will connect ourselves with Allah and develop the habit of reciting the Qurān. For every letter of the Qurān a person recites, Allah Ta’ala will grant him ten rewards. Imagine the reward he will receive for reciting a complete Surah or a Juz of the Qurān. If we can start reciting Qurān now, it will not be difficult for us to find time to recite Qurān in Ramadān, infact we will be able to increase the amount we were reciting before Ramadān.

Sighting the Moon

Ramadān commences after the crescent of Ramadān is sighted. The Dua to recite when looking at the crescent is:

اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِاليُمْنِ وَالإِيمَانِ ، وَالسَّلاَمَةِ وَالإِسْلاَمِ ، وَالتَّوْفِيقِ لِمَا تُحِبّ وتَرْضَى ،رَبِّي وربُّك الله

O Allah! Let this new moon appear to us with prosperity, faith, safety, and Islām and with hope of success to do deeds which you would like and approve of. My lord and your lord (O moon) is Allah.
